With advancing wireless communication technologies, hundreds of new applications are entering public utilization, and therefore the demand for radio frequency bands is on the rise. Since the radio frequency spectrum is an exhaustible resource requiring efficient utilization, cognitive radio technology presents a solution to the issue of spectrum efficiency, which hitherto could not be met through conventional approaches. This manuscript offers an overview of cognitive radio systems, which places special emphasis on their characteristics and operational mechanisms. The implementation and evaluation of simulation outcomes are covered while substantial challenges encountered in their design and deployment are addressed. Both basic and advanced tests have been carried out, and analytical assessment is provided along with simulation graphs and a data set generated by the cognitive radio system. Simulation results indicated that, based on the requirement and criterion of the SU users, the best free available channels are allocated.
