Interdisciplinary Research as a Panacea for Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Implications for Counselling

Abstract

Grace O. Akpochafo

There is a paradigm shift from research based on a single discipline or sub-discipline to interdisciplinary research which is defined as a mode of research by teams or individuals that integrates information, data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts, and / or theories from two or more disciplines or bodies of specialized knowledge to advance fundamental understanding or to solve problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline. Most of the hot topics of today are interdisciplinary in nature and, similarly, most of the great research triumphs are products of interdisciplinary research. The writer argues that Nigeria’s developmental problems can be better solved if subjected to interdisciplinary research. There is so many whys that cries for explanation and such explanations must draw from the knowledge embedded in two or more disciplines. Using monodisciplinary approach cannot unfathom the reasons behind the “whys” and “hows”. Problems can and invariably, do cut across the borders of any subject matter or discipline. The paper therefore recommends interdisciplinary research and explains the role of the guidance counsellor in fostering it
