Development and Validation of a Cost-Effective ELISA for Detecting a Novel Biomarker Associated with Early-Stage Alzheimer's Disease

The exact cause of Alzheimer's disease is unknown, but researchers believe it's a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Age is the biggest risk factor, with the risk increasing after 65. Alzheimer's disease is caused by the abnormal build-up of proteins in and around brain cells. One of the proteins involved is called amyloid, deposits of which form plaques around brain cells. The other protein is called tau, deposits of which form tangles within brain cells. Alzheimer's disease patients' neurotic plaques are mostly made up of Aβ, a 4-kDa peptide generated from the amyloid precursor protein. Evidence suggests that Aβ plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of the disease.
