+44 330 818 7254This article examines recent substantive research trends and sets the agenda for future research to trace this resurgence. Professional socialization, knowledge regimes, stratification within the profession, and the sociology of the field of medical education are the four current research foci that, while driving theoretical development elsewhere in the larger discipline, reflect and critically map onto earlier projects in this subfield. The following are six potential future directions in which additional research is required: disparities in medical education, socialization throughout a person's life and new institutional forms of gatekeeping, provider well-being, globalization, medical education as knowledge-based work, and the COVID-19 pandemic's effects.
