Correlates of divergent thinking among secondary school physics students

Abstract

Recent studies have reported a decline and lack of creativity across many nations, raising concern about low status of divergent thinking - the basis of creativity.  The purpose of this study was to explore some correlates of divergent thinking that would be utilized to enhance creativity. Its objective was to determine correlations between divergent thinking and: project work, creative attitude, critical thinking, originality, and interaction with toys and science materials. The study employed a correlation design and targeted a population of 2,236 12th grade secondary school physics students in Nairobi Province; while the sample comprised 763 respondents, obtained through stratified and random sampling techniques. Data were collected using Questionnaire for Physics Students, which was constructed by the researcher and validated by three experts in psychometric measures from Maseno University. The instrument had a reliability of .837; and significance of correlations was tested at p = 0.05 and p = 0.01 levels. Significant correlations were observed between divergent thinking scores and: creative attitude, critical thinking, extent of play with toys, and originality.  The study recommends (1) use of supplementary print and audiovisual scientific materials in schools to inspire creativity and (2) further research aimed at establishing causative relationships involving divergent thinking.
